DESCRIPTION: The ACL and PCL are ligaments that are located between the distal end of the femur and the proximal end of the tibia. The ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) attaches distally on the anterior aspect of the plateau of the tibia, and limits excessive anterior translation of the tibia, excessive posterior translation of the femur, and excessive rotational forces. The ACL is the most commonly sprained ligament of the knee joint, and is a common sports injury. The PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) attaches distally on the posterior aspect of the plateau of the tibia and limits excessive posterior translation of the tibia and excessive anterior translation of the femur.
